Supplemental Security Income (SSI)
A monthly payment for people who have little or no income and few resources, and who are either aged 65 or older, or blind, or disabled at any age. The age route and the disability route are separate: being under 65 does not put someone outside it. Social Security states that SSI is generally for people who do not earn more than 2,073 dollars from work, and there are exceptions to both the income and resource limits.
How to apply
Apply through the Social Security Administration. A County Veterans Service Office or HICAP counsellor can help with the paperwork at no charge.
